A very friendly, welcoming young lady greeted me on arrival. The room was lovely, large, and very clean. Comfortable bed. Loved the location - it was in a very tranquil setting. May not suit everyone as you need transport to drive to restaurants and shops. I stocked up in Oamaru before my stay. A very restful place to chill out. Take some reading material with you. The North Otago (base in Oamaru) area is a hidden gem.

The North Otago (base in Oamaru) area is a hidden gem. Penguins, seals, steam punk, cheese factory, crayfish and blue cod at Moeraki, historic sites. And good restaurants in Oamaru and the area (Whitestone Diner -- as long as you like cheese, Fat Sally's, Fishwife, Moeraki Tavern, Hampden Fish shop and others). We go back regularly and the area rarely disappoints. To enjoy fully you need a car.

It's a really cool town, the victorian precinct is amazing and you can spend hours just walking and admiring the buildings. There's a farmers market on Sundays and a lovely train that departs from the front to Steampunk museum to the penguin colony. It's a short but beautiful ride. There are sea lions and seals everywhere and it's guaranteed you'll take nice pictures from them 😉

    We loved Oamaru.

We loved Oamaru. It was a beautiful little town with stunning architecture and things to do. We enjoyed the steam punk HQ and the museums available to celebrate the towns heritage. Plenty of cafes and restaurants available and good quality food/ beverages.

The penguin sanctuary was lovely and we saw penguins during the day in the nests. The evening tour was fully booked so get in early if you want to do that.. The steam punk museum was suitably odd and they were very friendly when we got caught in a downpour and stayed sheltering there while they were closing. Plenty of chance to see seals basking on the foreshore. The victorian precinct however was just a street - possibly more exciting if you are from New Zealand of Australia but we live in a property older than anything on the street so not really that exciting if you are from the UK or the older cities in the US

A very pleasant surprise, was recommended to stop here by a friend, so glad we did. A quirky place , so much history. The Victorian quarter alone was wonderful. Steampunk also worth a look. Easy to walk around the town too. Ps some hilly streets 😀

I didn’t end up staying at this place. once I arrived and saw the condition of the yard and inside the house, I left. I understand this is a “value” meaning low price property (although I’ve stayed at really nice B&B’s for $60 US in New Zealand)but it is a dump. Red flags went up immediately meeting Roger and I decided not to stay. Didn’t even matter that I couldn’t get a refund. He did offer to give me a 50%refund if I returned to the house which I didn’t feel comfortable doing.

Oamaru Backpackers is truly a home away from home!!! It’s very homey, comfortable, clean, in a quiet residential area and perfect location to the Blue Penguin Colony, historical area of town and only a few minutes to the wharf! My bed was sooo comfortable & has a privacy curtain! It has a beautiful backyard where one could chill, read a book, eat a meal! The kitchen, dining area, lounge area & solarium are all very clean, spacious & perfect view of the wharf!

we had an apartment with a separate entry and it was awesome. The character of the place was great, having kept the vault door in the bedroom made it really unique. The decor in the lobby and the historical artefacts of Oamaru was really interesting. The breakfast concept also suited us very well. All in all, it’s a very well designed boutique hotel with very nice and attentive staff. Definitely worth the stop.

This accommodation was luxury extraordinaire. We felt spoilt and our room was massive with all the amenities provided we couldn't have ask for more. The breakfast had a lot of choices and was laid out like a 5 star hotel. The hosts David & Liz were warm, friendly, attentive and it's obvious they really enjoy people's company. Liz even turned down our bed and put the heater on whilst we watched the penguins.

This is a magical experience that lent in to the character of the city, theming each room with a selection of vintage pieces. The hostess are welcoming and communication recommends local restaurants which were outstanding. The hotel is by far the highlight of our 24 hour visit to Oamaru with a supermarket at the back door so that we could grab a bottle of wine and enjoy the facilities.

Perfect location. Handy to everything as long as you have transport. Nice room. We had a view of the hill behind Oamaru so the afternoon sun streamed in keeping it warm during the day. VERY good price for a holiday weekend. We wanted to come back but it was booked out. Highly recommend this motel.
